Those few nights to which Mom and Dad had agreed stretched out to two weeks, which I knew could extend well past a month and into the foreseeable future if we didn’t wear out our welcome too quickly. Before long, it was just kind of understood that Jake was staying with us until we could afford a place together. To do that, one of us would have to get a job somewhere other than at Busch Gardens.

When I was depositing my paycheck at First National Bank of Hampton Roads one late July morning, I casually said, “It sure would be cool to work here.” The teller’s eyes lit up.

“Why don’t you apply?” she asked me. The simplicity of her statement made me feel ashamed of my inertia of late.

“You have openings at this location?” I clarified.

“Sure do.” She completed my transaction and referred me to the branch’s teller manager. Jacqueline Benfield, or Jackie, told me that they did indeed have openings at that branch for people who had cash handling experience, but I would have to apply online. Was that supposed to be a deterrent?

I went online that night and filled in all of the meaningless forms. The teller had asked me to put her name on the application as a reference, but I forgot. Truth be told, I wouldn’t have remembered her name anyway.
